I'm Moving Out

After some inspiring determination from other interaction designers updating their personal blogs/portfolio's, i've decided to jump on the band wagon and get my feet dirty. I've had plenty of troubles along the way and still importing old posts manually (because i couldn't get the automated one working) but its almost complete.

Its been a long borious day with website hosting, php databases and copy/paste issues. But here it is, enjoy...

http://russellsmith.zxq.net/

I'll be constantly improving this new blog/portfolio to match my own tastes. So from now on, all new enteries will be posted there. Maybe in the future i'll change hostings and get a domain, but this will do for now.

Draft Synopsis

Introduction

I want to find out the interaction differences between British and Japanese cultures.

I am using a small wooden object as my case study material, ten of which will be sent to a British university, and ten to a Japanese university. The students can then personalize their object to however they wish, for example: they could carve patterns, add colour and other textures. Once all the objects are returned, I will then analyze the results and come to a conclusion on the effectiveness of my case study. Also, I will evaluate any problems that arise and create solutions for improving my methodology.

Methodology

Firstly, I will use prototyping to find the best design of a wooden object. All twenty objects will be of equal design and dimensions so that the results are made fair. I will send out emails to potential applicants before the end of the summer term and also ask them to participate in a questionnaire. Once I’ve got my two applicants, I can then release my wooden objects for them to be returned within a deadline of one month.

Prediction

• Response from both universities. I will receive all twenty objects back.
• There will be a significant difference in how students approached expressing themselves on these objects, which will insinuate a clear difference in culture between Britain and Japan.

Results

I hope to find out, using these wooden objects, if there is any difference in behavior and creativity between the students of Japan and the students of Britain. With a personal interest in the tradition and culture of Japan, I am very enthusiastic about finding the results of my research.

What if?

Over the past weeks there have been lectures on dissertation preperation and all have been very informal. It's pushing everyone to get ideas on what to write about including a lead question, research strategies and content. For next tuesday, a draft synopsis is require for the lead question and other important points like how and why that question has meaning.

My question is whats the difference between british and japanese human behaviour. I've always been interested in japanese culture and traditional aspects to their way of life. So with this broad area to base my question in, i wanted to have a more visual report on my findings. So with the usal research of history between the two nations and what design for interaction is to express what i believe interaction is. I want to create an object (for example, a wooden cube no bigger than 4inch3) and send 10 or 20 off to a japanese university and the same for a british university. Let the students do whatever they want to these cubes that represent themselfs or their culture/personal style. This can be from painting it completely black, sticking pins in it to carving some holes. Get these sent back and compare them.

So this is not a typical dissertation, It's documenting the project progress and conclusion. Both lectures seem to be very interested and mentioned both times, this will require determination.

A recent chat with my lecture mentioned my projects are playing it too safe (virtual environments) so i need to take alot more risk, because i can. I'm at uni and this is the time to do these types of things. So although many would say i'm being too ambisous, i feel like doing something on this scale will really pay out in the long run.

Heres a rough layout of how the document will be writen.

[analyzer~]

Carrying on from previous progress, many sound functions (objects) within max msp have shown some light into gathering certain data that needs to achieve with sound files. But still not there, so with todays lecture on jitters (external add-on for max msp) it has opened many possibiltys and the groups knowledge of other ways to tackle this project.

To explain whats happened, a step back is needed to explain some points. Max "msp" itself is the tool for sound manipulation and analyis's. Max is the actual name of the program. It has just always been refered to as max msp.. The msp is the sound "section". Jitter is the video "section". So think of it as max jitter and you see what i mean. With this add-on the previous intention of using a seperate program Processing to display visuals, is now possible inside max. Recent research found here showed that the group found out how to get the two programs talking to each other.

Today the group got taught how to manipulate video by changing fades, saturation, tolerance and so forth. This may prove helpful for later problems if decided to create visuals in max.

On the topic of exteral add-ons, while searching forums for types of objects that give sound infomation like pitch, tempo, noise, loudness and what not. The object [analyzer~] by Tristan Jehan sounded very promising and so the group looked into this. Forwarded to http://www.maxobjects.com/ which has pretty much every interal and external object for max. After being sent to http://web.media.mit.edu/~tristan/, the [analyzer~] object was downloaded with a .dll file, which was required for windows compatability.

Finally we had an object that gave not only everything mentioned before (pitch, tempo, noise, loudness) but also other weird and wonderful information like freqency and brightness. Another object was downloaded called [beat~] from the same website before which gets an average tempo. All excellent for this project with a far more denser light shining through.

Structor & Findings

The group has got the ball going this morning with a brainstorm of what needs to be done, everyones quality's, issue's ahead and potental extras. Ideas like a website introducing the group members and photos of the assignments progression, mic directions and projection arrangments. After this everyone was slotted a subject to research such as connection between MAX MSP and Processing, sound analysis, shape templates and other sections nessercery.

All findings and progression will be posted on http://shoutbox.craigdennisonline.com/ for the time being untill a good quality website is up and running. Sound analysis is important to the project due to requiring information from a sound wave. Details on its pitch, volume and length are required to create a shape. Thus the MAX MSP object [info~] is just the tip of the ice burg, research shows, but will need to be more complex. Here are some findings.

Output
Most of the information reported by info~ is taken from the audio file most recently read into the associated buffer~. If this information is not present, only the sampling rate is sent out the left outlet. No output occurs for any item that’s missing from the sound file.
float Out left outlet: The sampling rate of the sample.
Out 3rd outlet: Sustain loop start, in milliseconds.
Out 4th outlet: Sustain loop end, in milliseconds.
Out 5th outlet: Release loop start, in milliseconds.
Out 6th outlet: Release loop end, in milliseconds.
Out 7th outlet: Total time of the associated buffer~ object, in milliseconds.
Out 8th outlet: Name of the most recently read audio file.

Yesterdays Presentation, Tomorrows Assignment

Yesterday's presentation didn't go all that well. The structor was not a mess, its just the storyboard was the last slide, which should of been the 2nd slide. Explaining all the components, research and attraction before explaining what the concept is to start with, was a bad decision. Live and learn.

"Villege Fete" is a group project which will have it's groups decided on the best ideas of yesterdays presentations. Annoyingly the guys that always turn up had all their ideas chosen. Which means inevitabily each group will be cursed with indiviuals that either don't turn up, don't do work or both. We'll see how it goes but like with every group assignment that we don't have control over (group member wise), the quality of work is generally below standard. As a final product that is.

A different system has been decided on to mark individual members by the group marking them, anonymously of course. Which is great news because for the guys that turn up each day and work hard, get the rewards they deserve.

One of the ideas that will be worked on is,

"A Visual Shout Box
People make a noise that is then depicted on a projection / wall. The louder the noise the more ‘angry’ the image / animation or the more it does something. There is the possibility for many more shapes to be added by using (for example) the tone of the voice. These can then be printed or emailed to participants as a souvenir of their experience. http://craigdennisonline.com/"

Going to be exciting working with this project, but depending on who else joins the group, is leav't to be seen. More will be revealed tomorrow.

21st Presentation

Working on mondays presentation for the last couple of days and spent most of it deciding on a style. Straight off the bat i wanted it to have a heavy typography style to it and so i started playing with illustrator. Never used this program before but picked it up quite quickly and not too hard to work around if you know photoshop.

I did have a set template down yesterday, but once again was unhappy and thus researched typegraphy websites and prints. I want a good template down because this will be used throughout the remainer of this assignment. Mainly to keep a good and consistant style for it.

Here is the result.

Two Proposals

Finalized idea's need to be ready for mondays presentation. So i've rounded up two that I believe will be strong enough and original enough to make it through.

Motion Wave

"Using visual motion detected by a camera, you'll be able to push a sound file around and destort the music."

This will have a visual sound wave projected onto a screen with a motion camera. The camera will pick up either the most dense object in view (the user) or by heat, using infra red to detect hand movements and so fourth. Using this input the user can push the soundwave around on screen, in real time. So either pushing parts of the "wave" up or down to create a unique sound.

A sound track will be played for 10 seconds before the user has control, then he/she will need to copy the original track as close as possible. If that user becomes more than 80% accurate to the original track, they win a goldfish.

This will attract the public by interesting visuals onscreen and children wanting a goldfish. Also with the possibility of a ranking system (who gets the most accurate) it provides replayability for the competitive type. But all this will require 20p if the user wants a shot at the prizes on show.

Clapclap

"Visual sound wave which you'll need to replicate with clapping. Accurate clapping required."

Once again, a visual sound wave will be projected onto a screen but in the shape of a circle. This will be constantly pulsing untill the user interacts with it. This time, after the 20p has been received a pre made beat will play from the previous user. The current user needs to copy this by clapping. A microphone will pick up higher pitched noises loud enough, such as clapping to pulse the sound wave.

This pulsing circle will be very vibrate and obviously to wandering public to attract attention. Goldfish, cakes or other toys for prizes will attract the younger audience to participate.

Village Fete

With a start of a new term, the project beings. This time we're doing a "Village Fete" which involves balls and coconuts, booths and prizes. This is proving to be more exciting as each day passes with an ocean full of ideas flooding out of everyones minds. Ultimately we need to design and create a booth that will interest people to raise money for the local church roof and thus, here are some ideas thats been condured up.

Car football

Having 12 remote cars on a mini football pitch, try and knock the oversized ball into the net. Whoever scores a goal gets a prize. The more balls scored by one person, the better the prise.

Monster destory village

Control a mini machnical monster through a village and get a prize for knocking all the buildings down in the time limit.

Skate paint

Half pipe with two people on a skateboard with sprayed paint coming off the wheels.

Piano

Oversized piano that the user needs to complete a set amount of key strokes to win.

Stumps

Climb the stumps and get to the top. Certain stumps may light up which will need to be followed to successfully complete the challenge.

1/4 mile

Using the user's motion of an input device will power the onscreen vechicles down the end of the track. Quickeset movement wins the race.

Bend the pole

Test your strenght with "Bend the pole" and see how far you can pull it down. Much like throw the hammer but upside down. A ranking system will be means of beating the top score.

Tree climb

See how high you can climb the tree to get the apples. Get 10 apples in the time limit to win.

Finger path

Finger path your way through a maze and if by any chance you touch the maze walls, you will get a electric shock. Removing your finger from the maze will also result in failure.

Buggy paint

Much like "Skate paint", people peddle a small plastic car with paint being sprayed onto the wheels. More of your colour in the arena makes you the winner.

Roll bean bag

Mini bean bag inside a maze. Roll it to the end before it fills up with water.

Horse race

Cheer on your horse of choice to increase it's speed. Shouting or shaking the provided gambling tickets will increase your chances.

Clap

Visual sound wave which you'll need to replicate with clapping. Accurate clapping required.

Motion wave

Using visual motion detected by a camera, you'll be able to push a sound file around and destort the music.

These are just some of the ideas presented this past week and will be narrowed down into a favourite 2 or 3. After todays workshop on http://www.cycling74.com/products/maxmsp more ideas have poped up and will be making an addition to the list.

Sputnik

Here is a very nice presentation of the russian built "Sputnik". As TED rightly describes "Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik in 1957 led to both the space race and the arms race -- and jump-started science and math education around the world". Its an interesting 4 minutes and if anything, you'll get a little bit of knowledge on how the space race jumped a gear.

Interfaces

Everytime i design a website the first thing i think about is how the menu will look, function and feel. Designing intuitive interfaces is hard work and without staying within conventonal layout styles, 99% of the time users get lost and give up. I've just come across a website that trys a new type of interface and just works brilliantly. I think anyways.

Take a look!

Bookmarks & RSS? It's all so easy

Discovered the addons section of firefox half hour ago and i've done all sorts including setting up rss feeds to all my blogs of interest, bookmark panel with just the images (saves clicking on a list when its just there) and different types of themes. The original ended going back on but you know how it is.

As for my life atm not much has happened as you've probably guess other than looking forward to my bday tuesday and the vast amount of drink around that day.

But possibly the only thing i've done with myself other than the odd subway is i've changed my banner. Wanted something like neils blog which has it in sniq (sp?) with the background and so fourth. So late last night i made a little white mess and stuck my name to it.

Btw if you've got issues with the size of my blogs text, push ctrl + you fucking mug.

Have a nice day :)

End of term

Suppose i better conclude this term while its still fresh in my mind. The last 2/3 weeks have been hard and stressful, esspecally a week before Virtual Environments was due in but once that was out the way everything looked up.

VE's presentation went alright but nothing special and don't expect to get a brilliant grade but hopfully a better one that last terms efforts. Contextual studies was next and fourtually that was bashed out in a day followed with a well deserved pint. Good days.

Content management systems went smoothly this week as i kept on top of things and had a (apparently) brilliant presentation today. Delivered with a heavy journal was a cherry on the cake. But then again they're not gonna rip into you there at the presentation so i'm not expecting anything grade wise.

BUT that means the term is over and got like 3+ weeks to myself (and little john) so with my birthday coming up next week it's gonna be 3 nights of carlings, shots and chinese's.

Looks like i better find a job

Monday....Tick!

Well today started off as a go go for the presentation but one of the lectures decided to give me a shit load of work to do instead. Had to redo all the images i did last night and change the actual coded site. Pain in the arse but i got some interesting feedback from people and it was a bit shocking to realise that so many people couldn't find the post button, even though it's sitting in the middle of the most obvious place of the site. Obviously not...

But when i got home i got on with the presentation and with a bit of play, work, play, I cooked up 45 slides! Which pointed out by craig isn't a good thing so tomorrow i'll delete/merge a couple and rethink the structor.

So yes i did do work today and had the most random conversation with craig. all shits and giggles

Sunday....Tick!

On my list to do for thursday is on monday, get all the extra sketchs done and list all the problems and security issues etc. Also try and start the presentation. Tuesday is finishing the presentation and also try finishing up the journal too. Bought an A3 sketchbook today while i was out because of the horrid memory of last weeks efforts. Wednesday will be cleaning everything up and chilling out, maybe fine tune the coding on the site. See how it goes.

But i'm gliding through this because ive done what i needed to do today and that was do all the images of "what it would look like". This consist of 10 images going through a scenario when you go to my site. Order is as follows -

front page
sign in
gallery
full view
ranking
daily ranking
checkout/print
forum
about me
front page again

This is the majority of the presentation and here are some pics

CM coding finished'ish

After yesterdays 8 hour straight session of php and sql i thought i'd see (with a fresh mind) get the problems i had yesterday sorted before the guys came round to sort the other project out. And guess what? this madass mofo not only just gone and done it! The image upload is working and its sweeeeet. There isn't resize or thumbnail versions but its more than enough for thursday presentation which i'm essatic about because the only thing i "need" to solve is some silly background image not repeating.

Things i've dropped from coding though are the edit, delete and full page sections due to it being too complicatied. Doesn't sound difficult but i would need to make the image upload far more complex and getting it to do what i've done so far was hard enough.

So now on my little list is

* Images of the other pages / what it would look like
* background repeat thing (the middle shadow)

the images would be
* about me
* shop
* gallery
* edit
* delete
* top rank
* forum
* sign in / sign out

So heres a screenshot of the actual coded site

Dark horse

Although i woke up at 1pm and didn't even start work till 2:30ish, i've got through an awful lot today, but not without its problems. From what you saw in yesterdays post i've got the right hand side all dynamic now which basically means you can goto "create new post", type some stuff in and it appears on the front page.

Things i need to do are -
* upload an actual image
* get the date working
* edit and delete posts
* background shadow
* full screen page

Once there all ticked i can start adding extras like a more complex image upload and search via usernames.

Problems i've had these last couple of hours are -

* Arrays
* pushing info into Arrays
* for loops
* string values (length and characters etc)
* array values (-"-)
* inserting Now date which i'm working on now (* EDIT, sorted.)
* and image in php. Annoying symtax's

Anyway, heres where i am now :) A trained eye will notice typical html to a photoshop.

Colourful box's rock my socks

Very quickly the presentation went well today, nothing strange happened.

But as promised i got straight onto content management today and decided to create the site using CSS. My reason for this is because i for one know css fairly well due to my previous work and two i think its excellent the way its all set out and how you construct it. So heres what i got so far,

The colourful box is going to be the repeated region. This is possibily the most important part of the site as this will be the only part that needs to actually work!

Fin

Well i'm happy to annouce my Virtual Environments project is completed. Presentation, journal/research and the acutal thing itself is done and dusted. hooray

I'm gonna take a break for the rest of the night but its straight onto Content Management tomorrow.

I'm hoping for a better mark with this one :/

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming

It's the final couple of push's for thursday presentation and i can offically annouce my vizard project is working and presentable! Now is just a case of buying an A3 sketch book and paste all my sketchs in and blog enterys (with a few notes on the side explaining whats going on) and do the same find but on the computer to present along with the vizard. All the content is collected and ready, just a case of doing it once i get this sketch book (no thanks to the unis shop being closed today) i'll be happy bunny and straight onto content management again.

On that note, while i didn't have my A3 sketch book i've been busy recreating my content management site. The lectures want it fully realised so thats what i'm going to do. Heres what i came up with today and you can find previous screen shots in an eariler blog entery.

Monday, 25 February 2008

Its the coil train!

Today was a good start to the week as i finally got my vizard script working! You simply point and click the mouse at the screen and it shoots a ball into the stage. If this ball hits any of the 3 screens, depending on which one it hits, will make either a guitar, snare or piano noise. It is still a little sketchy as the balls sometimes fly through the walls but its progress. I think the problem is the fact that i'm importing the files as .wrl and not something else. I'll look into this as it will be someone else testing it on the final day.

Also made a video representation of what it would ultimatly look like. The youtube like is here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIhENiJsXXg

Finally i got the base code down for my presentation too. I wanted to do this for my last presentation but never got the time and actually thought of a just as nice idea. But basically it was a screenshot of the program "Vizard" (which is what i'm using to create this project) and on a mouse click, the presentation lines got typed out as if it was being typed out in the coding screen. Looks really nice and its dynamic so its easy to update now. Just gotta put it into some kind of structer for thursday.

I'll work on the structer now but also compile my journal together. Lets hope i complete it before i get a headache.

What happened to 20 Minutes?

well after my (pretty damn awesome) presentation i was expecting a couple of questions, which i was prepered for.... but i wasn't prepared for the next hour chat the lectures decided to do about potental for my content management project. Was only mean't to be 20 minutes! taking into concideration it was uber hot and i hadn't had a drink in ages, i almost laid an egg.

But i think it was pretty positive, although the lectures want this and this and i just don't think i'll be able to do everything. So regardless of what i'll do, they will just be disapointed that i didn't get everything else done.

Who knows

Is it a blog? Is it a Site? No, its....

After just coming back from Cardiff, I felt like diving into doing some work. So here is the process of my content management site. But while doing this i realised many problems i will either have to encounter or design my way round them. Issues like dates, categorying (by dates/style), dynamic spacing, username, password, search and security. We'll see how it turns round in the following weeks.

I was going to try and photoshop the images into a browser to get a better feel for it. But my print screen button doesn't seem to work, so you'll have to do with the big images for now.

* the numbers in the white box's are the date of when it was posted.

Funky Super Cloud Designs Inc

Small update but today i drew the character designs for the clouds. Inspired by Chiho Aoshima and Takeashi Murakami (two excellent japanese artist that you should defently check out), these will be projected onto a smoke screen when something is bought from the vending machine. Sounds weird but either by tomorrow or friday, i will upload the final concept.

Vending Machine

First thing i done today was write down in bullet points, what i need to do and have finished by the end of this term. That may seem obvious but i need to manage my time better than i have been. Looking at everything on paper doesn't seem too bad concidering i have 4 weeks to finish the projects.

But the reason for this post is the 1 week project we started yesterday. Now at first i didn't want to get involved due to the amount of work piling up but due to my little list, i feel i made the right choice in getting involved. We need to create a vending machine... Sounds stupid enough but my group came up with loads of great ideas and some really random ones. Like one that gives you epilepsy and another vending babys. But we settled for a vending machine that venders clouds. Its still a little skeptical but basically you purchase your own cloud. I love it and can't wait to see the results friday.

So far we have all sketched different ways of creating this vender aswell as a quick render to get an idea on how we're gonna present this.

Virtual Enviroments 02

Although i done the modeling and render a couple weeks back, i completely forgot to upload it here. So below is my new idea which isn't as good (i think) but much more realistic and maybe even more enjoyable than my previous efforts.

The idea is (baseing on the three huge screen that it will be presented on) three screens, with high and low tones on each one. One screen will represent a piano, another guitar and the last will be drums. Where this comes into play is either with a mouse or wii remote, the user will throw tags at the screens and have a musical response. So for example i threw a tag at the high note of the piano screen. A short, high pitched piano track will play but the interesting part comes in when you start to throw tags at all screens and start creating something musical.

The multi coloured tags in the render represent different users. So i will be aiming to get multiple action in there. 4 people playing this at once will be really interesting!

On a sunday! Are you mad?

After going through the php tutorials handed out to our class the other day, it was important that i learn't how to get information from a database, display it on screen, then input data and send it back. After some help from my brother i have just finished a successful transition of information! What this means is the potental blog i will be making finally has its backbone structor. Which is excellent because i can get on with making it look pretty. At the moment its a complete and utter mess.

Also the other night, i got loads of research in for the same project. I searched loads of other artist showcases which is the competition of my blog idea and the results were very interesting as most of hideous and very unprofessional. The few that are really inspiring though are of course http://shop.deviantart.com/ and http://www.conceptart.org/ but also the unregulated http://www.4chan.org/. Enter 4chan at your own risk as there is some nasty stuff there! Searching different types of blog layouts too was interesting.

Will hopefully get time to sketch out templates and reasons why due to this and this and so fourth i have done this. But ultimately even though i'm not out of the deep end yet, the light is shiny through, now that a good chunk of research is done and the php connections are finished.

I'm sure my enthusiasm wont hold up for long.

The Chase (Balloon Project Berlin)

Heres a completely random but awesome idea that you always seem to find on youtube. Its called the chase, which is a couple of guys attaching a video camera to 30 helium balloons and chase after it! While captureing footage of course. Its so random and doesn't really have a point but its an excellent idea. They've even done a New York one and hopefully many others.

3DS Max Tutorial. Lighting & Rendering

While i've been busy bullet pointing what needs to be researched for my content management assignment like problems, competition and improvements. But I thought i'd do a tutorial on what i've learn't from the virtual enviroments assignment and hopefully using this method in some wayto improve my final efforts.

1.

Make a plane and a teapot. Chuck the segments up on the teapots modify menu, although this isn't important.

Rendering this will give you this horendous effect.

1.5.

click the top view and put a skylight in there somewhere! very important. Its under the lights tab in create. Will instantly improve your render but make sure you "rendering (top of the screen), advanced lighting, light tracer..." and click render from there. Only need to do this once, from now on just push F9 for rendering.

2.

select the teapot and push m. This brings up the materials menu and from here, play a little with the "specular level" and "glossiness" to give it some shine.

3.

Then you should see a few tabs below, click the maps one and tick "diffuse color" and "reflection".

4.

Click the "none" tab next to "diffuse color" and it brings up a new window. Click "Fallout". Then go back by clicking the small back arrow above the "fallout parameters tab" (small icon, second one in from the right).

5.

Do the same with "reflection". Click none and choose "fallout" but this time when it takes you to the next window after, click the second "none" box down (the one shown in the picture below) and click "raytrace".

6.

Now play with the black and white box's in both, "diffuse color" and "reflection". Choose whatever colours and experiment by rendering.

7.

The end result should look something like this!

I've got some ground!

Today has been interesting. The interaction studio got all its furniture moved around again for the better, i think (even know i didn't participate because i'm lazy). But also i felt some progression on the new content management assignment as i decided to brainstorm ideas and came up with a realistic one that could well be possible to do. Even if i had to do it myself.

The idea (baseing it on making the world a better place *puke*) was to make a blog (wow!?) that anyone can sign up to and basically post a link to an inspiring peace of artwork on the net. hopfully including a personal description about it and build up a database of all kinds of inspiring creative work that can be from photography to cleaver advertisment. It really is based on the community and maybe even including a voting system where if that link has 50+ votes, it gets put up the top of the blog as a todays feature or something.

Talking with flo and mark? is it? they really did see potental and talked about how to make some kind of profit from this. This ended up going on for about an hour of different possibiltys but basically i need to research the competition and other simular types of popular art sites and see whats good and whats not. I've got a whole list of things to research its not even funny. It will keep me busy i'm sure but all this thought process made me wonder if learning PHP and mySQL in 4 weeks is possible, let alone this whole money making thing. I'll get the base down and depending on time, i'll build appon it.

Moving onto the other Virtual Enviroments assignment, i downloaded the nessacery program and had a good laugh with it! It's called Vizard, downloaded here > http://www.worldviz.com/products/vizard/index.html and the beginners tutorial is really easy and friendly, so even i flew through it without any problems.

So things are looking up! after my last post of being concerned, i've actually got some ground now. And while i remember, big thanks to Micheal Campbell for giving my a head start on php programing too! http://www.php.net/ has good references on how to bring in data from and to mySQL. Links are below for anyone to ponder at.

Untitled? Quite possibily.

First off watch this video, it's hilarious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-8hQh6hdnI

Secondly my progress on the website i'm currently working on, the main codes are in and essentally the menu is fully working. The bells and whistles arn't there yet but that is all done after the content is in. Which is the current situation now, waiting for the client to send over his work and information about himself etc.

Lastly i've constantly been annoyed at myself for not pulling my finger out on my uni assignments.. They need to been moving and i haven't even started one of them, the other is half done. The problem is we're not being tought the essentals to finish the projects. For example we need to learn a program called something or other, can't remember but apparently our personal lecture has bought a few books but i haven't seen them.

Ravensbourne is currently pissing me off because i've got more facilitys on my laptop than i have there. The only thing i haven't got on my laptop is the drinks machine.

Heres hoping monday will be a turn of events and things pick up the pase.

Virtual Enviroments

The drawing is rough and so is the concept, but i've dived into 3D studio max regardless. The brief is to create a virtual interactive enviroment that will be presentied in 3 weeks. Taking into concideration we're not being taught the programming langauge till late next week, i doubt anyone will be able to fully realise there ideas. But putting that to the side i've modelled my concept so i can get a good idea on how it will actually work and look.

Essecially you will start off with 3 cells and a black ball rolling around them. With this you can pull the cell to create bumps and when the ball hits the bump, it creates a beep or a certain pitch of a selected instrument. You can also make them bigger which increases the volume so if your really talented you can make a full fleged song with many cells. It is still in early development and will undoubtably change but heres a render anyway.

A good or bad day?

Today has had its ups and downs. Rude women and a poor grade for group work hasn't helped but on the other side, nandos and good results from 3d stuido max tutorials the day has evened itself out. The green thing you see is the result of what i learn't today. I think its pretty cool but random and i'm sure i'll congure up something better tomorrow but here it is anyway. And the same rendering method but on a car model i didn't finish a year ago.

Freelance Progress

So to give you an idea on what i've been up to. I have been working on a clients (yes, client!) portfolio website and to say i'm pretty happy with the outcome because the amount of ideas i threw at it. Scrapping this and scrappy that, it has finally come to something realistic and sensible. So here are two screen shots which i sent to the client today.

Got a reply saying he really likes it and apart from changing minor things. It is good to go so within the following week i'll be busy with actionscript :/
