I'm Moving Out

After some inspiring determination from other interaction designers updating their personal blogs/portfolio's, i've decided to jump on the band wagon and get my feet dirty. I've had plenty of troubles along the way and still importing old posts manually (because i couldn't get the automated one working) but its almost complete.

Its been a long borious day with website hosting, php databases and copy/paste issues. But here it is, enjoy...

I'll be constantly improving this new blog/portfolio to match my own tastes. So from now on, all new enteries will be posted there. Maybe in the future i'll change hostings and get a domain, but this will do for now.

Draft Synopsis

Introduction

I want to find out the interaction differences between British and Japanese cultures.

I am using a small wooden object as my case study material, ten of which will be sent to a British university, and ten to a Japanese university. The students can then personalize their object to however they wish, for example: they could carve patterns, add colour and other textures. Once all the objects are returned, I will then analyze the results and come to a conclusion on the effectiveness of my case study. Also, I will evaluate any problems that arise and create solutions for improving my methodology.

Methodology

Firstly, I will use prototyping to find the best design of a wooden object. All twenty objects will be of equal design and dimensions so that the results are made fair. I will send out emails to potential applicants before the end of the summer term and also ask them to participate in a questionnaire. Once I’ve got my two applicants, I can then release my wooden objects for them to be returned within a deadline of one month.

Prediction

• Response from both universities. I will receive all twenty objects back.
• There will be a significant difference in how students approached expressing themselves on these objects, which will insinuate a clear difference in culture between Britain and Japan.

Results

I hope to find out, using these wooden objects, if there is any difference in behavior and creativity between the students of Japan and the students of Britain. With a personal interest in the tradition and culture of Japan, I am very enthusiastic about finding the results of my research.

What if?

Over the past weeks there have been lectures on dissertation preperation and all have been very informal. It's pushing everyone to get ideas on what to write about including a lead question, research strategies and content. For next tuesday, a draft synopsis is require for the lead question and other important points like how and why that question has meaning.

My question is whats the difference between british and japanese human behaviour. I've always been interested in japanese culture and traditional aspects to their way of life. So with this broad area to base my question in, i wanted to have a more visual report on my findings. So with the usal research of history between the two nations and what design for interaction is to express what i believe interaction is. I want to create an object (for example, a wooden cube no bigger than 4inch3) and send 10 or 20 off to a japanese university and the same for a british university. Let the students do whatever they want to these cubes that represent themselfs or their culture/personal style. This can be from painting it completely black, sticking pins in it to carving some holes. Get these sent back and compare them.

So this is not a typical dissertation, It's documenting the project progress and conclusion. Both lectures seem to be very interested and mentioned both times, this will require determination.

A recent chat with my lecture mentioned my projects are playing it too safe (virtual environments) so i need to take alot more risk, because i can. I'm at uni and this is the time to do these types of things. So although many would say i'm being too ambisous, i feel like doing something on this scale will really pay out in the long run.

Heres a rough layout of how the document will be writen.
